MIS-C Data

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare but serious condition associated with COVID-19 wherein multiple organ systems can become inflamed. While we do not yet know what causes MIS-C, we know many children with MIS-C were infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 or had been exposed to a confirmed COVID-19 case.
The case definition for MIS-C is:

  • An individual younger than 21, with fever, laboratory evidence of inflammation, and severe illness requiring hospitalization with multisystem (two or more) organ involvement, AND
  • A positive COVID-19 test or exposure to a confirmed COVID-19 case within 4 weeks prior to symptom onset, AND
  • No other plausible diagnoses.

For more information on MIS-C, visit the CDC website on Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS).
